I was 40 years old before I had my first glimpse of the Grand Canyon, and believe me it was well worth the wait. Friends and I had been camping in the high desert of Arizona, and many of us had not seen the Grand Canyon. We decided to leave our incredible isolation and journey all night in order to get there at sunrise. Four vehicles filled with excited friends caravaned from 11:30 p.m. until that amazing morning hour as we pulled into the Grand Canyon park. Words will never be able to describe the amazing gift of beauty Mother Earth offered that summer morning as the sun rose and revealed a beauty my eyes had never held. I had seen pictures and watched specials on TV throughout my entire lifetime, but never could either of these forms of media capture the beauty this incredible place invokes. I will remember that morning forever, and I will continue to marvel at the gift of Mother Nature, and wonder why we as a country abuse the environment so. We just sat and quietly contemplated and meditated in this beautiful place. The gift was offered and we received it with such humility.
