Even if you don’t hike to the bottom, you must take a stroll along the rim trail on the South Rim (especially at sunrise/sunset). The play of color on the rocks is amazing! It is worth staying overnight at one of the lodges so you can rest from travel and enjoy the view.
Quick Tips/Suggestions:
If you hike down, you can get some good gear at the park store. You can also rent poles and buy crampons (if ice on trail)…trust me, these are very good things and your best friend in steep places. I packed some poles, but ended up renting the park poles because they were lighter.
Best Way to Get Around:
The park has a great inter-park bus system. Also, there is a great train that runs to/from Williams for all you train buffs.
