Get In The Canyon

June 19, 2005

You have to get in the canyon to really experience it. Having said that, don’t do it unless you’re prepared. That means being in good condition, knowing that getting out will take at least three times as long as going down, taking plenty of water and some food and using hiking poles if you have any problems with knees or legs. Unless you are at a competitive triathlete/marathon level, do not try to go to the bottom and back to the rim in one day.

I used a guide service, spent two nights camping in the canyon, hiked to the bottom and slept in the open looking at thousands of stars. It was about the fourth week of March and the weather was perfect. It was a great trip and I’m going back this March for more.
