We stayed at the Yavapai Lodge (East wing) for two nights and were extremely happy with the accomodations. The East Wing is housed in several depressing-looking seventies era buildings, but the room interiors have been redone, with some curious exceptions. For the example, the room sink had new fixtures, but they left the old, worn sink in, plus the light switches were yellowed and old. Very convenient location, away from the rim crowds, and bus service right at the front door.
The room had nice mission-style furniture, bed was firm and comfy, and the temperature control was A-one, being computerized, and worked great. Two very deep and comfy armchairs as well. There is no heat in the bathroom, but you can turn some heat on via a timing switch (old original) that blows in hot air from a loud fan in the ceiling. If you are fussy about pillows, bring your own as the ones they have could double for pancakes. They are happy to bring extra blankets as we requested as we had a snow and cold temps the second night we stayed.
The cafeteria serves very decent — well — cafeteria food, but we were happy to eat there, it was like home cooking. Make sure to try the Chicken Pot Pie, Hot Beef Sandwich, and the kids will love the many flavors of soft-serve ice cream. They are also known for their fried chicken. Two can eat generously for $20.00 US. Overall, food was fresh, there was good food selection, and the salad bar (the only one on the rim) was always fresh, even though they had iceberg lettuce all the time. (So, I’m a lettuce snob).
Our room was $105 US which we were shocked about, since I’m sure they could get much more, being right by the Grand Canyon. Service was excellent. It was our first time at the Grand Canyon, and we were impressed on how well organized the area is to move and serve people efficiently. We would return again, for sure. Excellent Value.
