We flew over the very rim of it on our way from Boston

August 1, 2005

My friend Eunice and I headed out to the Grand Canyon on our Las Vegas trip this past January.

We flew over the very rim of it on our way from Boston and I couldn’t wait until the next day to wake bright and early for the day trip.

We climbed into the smallest plane I have ever been in and off we went. The Strip disappeared from our view as the landscape got more and more desolate.

We flew over the Hoover Dam and circled it from above. Images from Superman popped into my head as I took in the size of the structure. We spent lunch at one of the Indian reservations on the west rim of the canyon and spent the afternoon exploring and oohing and ahhing.

Helicopters and planes would fly by in the distance. We could hear the engine and only if we looked really hard could we spot the mosquito-sized plane against the massiveness of the canyon.

It was bigger than I ever imagined. The air was so clean and fresh and I felt like the world just fell away and nothing mattered.

Being surrounded in silence by nature so massive as the Grand Canyon was humbling to say the least.

I felt like I was floating in outer space.
