I visited the Grand Canyon in May 2001 with three ladies from my church. They were 55, 77 and 82 at the time (I, at 45, was the youngster on the trip!). It was the first time to the Grand Canyon for most of us. The 77-year-old, who drove all the way from Arkansas and back, had been at least once before. The trip had been the idea of 82-year-old Flora, who said she had always wanted to see the Grand Canyon. We arrived on Monday afternoon in time to watch the sunset from Bright Angel Lodge. My first look at the canyon moved me to tears. To think of the forces of nature that formed the canyon was awesome! I was struck by the stark beauty and was surprised at how quiet the people around me were. All the people spoke in whispers, almost reverently. I was also amazed at the tenacity of the plants. To be able to grow in such harsh conditions and to even put out beautiful blooms was really unbelievable. If only people could have such determination!
